Despite not having that many sailor souvenirs in our collection, this doll is an example of the few that we do have.⠀
⠀
The doll was gifted to Mr. William Brookhouser by a child in Japan. Mr. Brookhouser served onboard New Jersey during World War II in the Supply Division and he manned a 40mm gun as his general quarters station. Did you, or a family member, serve on the ship and bring home any souvenirs from foreign ports? We'd love to hear about them in the comments! (Donated by Holly Brookhouser, 2020.036.0001 A-B)⠀

Our Teak Guitar Clock eBay Auction was won by Greg Mitchell, a retired Navy Master Chief from West Virginia.

Greg is a USS New Jersey plank owner having served on her in the mid 80’s. When he left he was unable to take his guitar home with him. He never did get it back but now he will always have a piece of the his ship – the New Jersey -- and the memories of those days with his guitar on his wall. Thank you, Greg, for sharing your memories of the USS New Jersey with us and supporting the ship.

Downtime never goes unappreciated in the #Navy ⚓⠀
⠀
It was quite common, particularly during her 1950’s commission, for New Jersey to head to Cuba for training after yard periods or exchanging midshipman classes. While there, the crew would practice general quarter drills, make use of the naval training range, and overall ensure that the ship and crew were ready to deploy to foreign waters. But never let it be said that the Navy does not appreciate its downtime. Talent shows, sports competitions, food, and music were always on the agenda with schedules allowed. Donated by William E. Zentgraf.⠀
