MEMBERS ONLINE EVENT TO COMMEMORATE V-E DAY

To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the End of World War II in Europe, join our Curator on May 8 at 6pm on Zoom for a special conversation about the War in Europe.

When he is done, we will open the floor to answer your questions about the war or the Battleship.

This program is free and open to all Battleship New Jersey members. Members can get the link to the online event by emailing membership@battleshipnewjersey.org.

To become a member or renew your membership, visit www.battleshipnewjersey.org/join or call 866-877-6262 ext. 127.

If you have recently made a donation to the Battleship, we thank you again.

This week the Battleship mailed out letters to past supporters asking for donations.

The Battleship is currently closed because of COVID-19. Maintaining a 77-year-old, 887-foot-long, 57,000 ton floating ship is expensive. It costs thousands of dollars a day to keep the ship afloat on the river. The majority of the ship’s revenue comes from tours and other activities currently suspended. Your support at this critical time will be put to good use repairing the deck and making sure the ship can quickly reopen when the shutdown is lifted.

Donors of $40 or more will receive a Battleship Membership. Donors of $125 or more will get a membership that includes the North American Reciprocal Museum Association, which provides free or reduced admission to more than 1,000 museums nationwide.

Please make a tax-deductible donation by mailing a check to Battleship New Jersey, 62 Battleship Place, Camden, NJ, 08102. You can also make a donation with a credit card by calling (866) 877-6262 Extension 127 or by visiting www.battleshipnewjersey.org/give

CHOOSE A DATE TO FLY A FLAG OVER THE BIG J AND HELP THE BATTLESHIP!

Did you know you can choose a date for the Battleship to fly an American flag above the ship?

Visit the Battleship’s website
www.battleshipnewjersey.org/shop
Purchase a flag and then email events@battleshipnewjersey.org with the date that you want your flag to fly.

The Flag will be flown on the ship’s main mast and sent to the buyer, along with a Certificate of Authenticity. We’ll fly a 4’x6′ flag for a $62 donation or a 5’x8′ flag for a $100 donation, while supplies last. All proceeds go to support the Battleship, currently closed for tours due to the coronavirus.

BATTLESHIP LIT BLUE TO SHOW SUPPORT OF HEALTHCARE PERSONNEL

The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is lit blue to join other buildings and structures to show support to our frontline healthcare personnel!

Bravo Zulu doctors, nurses, EMS personnel, police, fire, and everyone who is caring for us during this crisis! Thank you for your commitment to our nation.

TRIVIA

The Trivia Question for the April e-newsletter was:
Battleships like New Jersey were designed to carry float planes to spot for the big guns when they had to fire over the horizon. During the Okinawa Campaign, the USS New Jersey’s float planes performed another valuable service, what was it?

The correct and randomly selected answer is: Float Planes were also used to rescue down pilots

The correct answer was submitted by James Bishop, who won a flag flown above the Battleship!

This e-newsletter’s question is: On May 23, the Battleship will celebrate the 77th anniversary of her commissioning into the Navy. On May 23, 1947, where did the crew of the New Jersey celebrate the ship’s 4th commissioning anniversary?

The correct, randomly-selected answer will win a US Flag flown above the Battleship New Jersey! Send your answer via email to j.willard@battleshipnewjersey.org
