Friday November 11, 2016 11:30 am to 2:00 pm at the Battleship New Jersey Museum Gift Shop. No ticket necessary to access museum gift shop.

Meet Colleen and hear veterans share their stories. Lilla’s Sunflowers is an enchanting picture book that shows how a young girl endures her father’s absence while he is away on active military duty and how her one simple act of sharing has wonderful and unintended consequences.
Kosinski confides, “Although this book comforts families going through active deployment, I am heartened at the emotional impact this book has on veterans. Lilla’s Sunflowers strikes a chord among veterans looking for sensitive ways to convey their families’ past hardships and challenges of deployment to their grandchildren and great grandchildren.”
About the Book: Lilla’s Sunflowers Lilla and Papa enjoy spending magical times in Lilla’s sunflower patch. Before Papa leaves for deployment overseas, Lilla gives him a sunflower seed. “To remember me, Papa,” Lilla whispers. Seasons pass, and Lilla’s mood falls like autumn leaves. Finally, news comes that her papa is coming home! The following summer, to her surprise, she receives letters from families with photos of their loved ones pictured with sunflowers. She learns that her gift to her father brightened the dark days for many people, and that her one small seed continued spreading sunshine across the country.
Testimonials: “My 30+ years in active duty in the US Marine Corp kept me away from my children much of the time. People don’t understand what it’s like unless they go through it. This book gets it. I’m making up for that lost time with my granddaughter and this book is part of that.” – LTC USA, Ret.

“My husband and I have a 5 year old daughter, and have been struggling to find an age appropriate book about this exact subject matter. My husband will be deployed to Iraq for all of 2017. Your book will be tremendously helpful to our family during this time. Thank you so much!! p.s. We are totally stealing your sunflower seed idea.” – M. Krug

“My husband was a Marine in Fallujah, Iraq … The artwork, like the story’s heroine, is wistful and whimsical. … Although the military aspect comes through in the illustrations, the text of the story is not military specific at all, nor does it address the danger Lilla’s daddy may be in, both of which I think are extremely appropriate. Instead, the illustrations portray the scope of Lilla’s emotions, from hopeful to angry to sad. The book is meant to be a comfort to any child whose parent is away for an extended period, and we have certainly been in that boat. I give this book an A+”  – J. Robertson
