Korean War Exhibit to Open on June 26

WHEN:          Saturday, June 26   11am

WHAT:          On Saturday, June 26, the Battleship will open a new exhibit on the Korean War in

the Exhibits area, along the main tour route of the museum ship.  The new exhibit,

“Battleship New Jersey: The Korean War and Beyond,” is a brief overview of the ship’s

active career during the 1950s.

Using the ship’s newspaper (The Jerseyman) as a backdrop, the 12-panel exhibit follows

the ship from her recommissioning in 1950, through both her tours of duty during the

Korean War, and her multiple training cruises, until her decommissioning in 1957.  Six

display cases of objects and document from the museum’s collection that have never been

displayed will be used for this exhibit.  It will also be the Battleship’s first exhibit installed

with multilingual signage (English, Spanish, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese) to make it

more accessible to our diverse community and guests. The exhibit will run until June 2023.

The Battleship will open the exhibit with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11am on Saturday,

June 26.  The Head Consul of the Consular Office of the Republic of Korea in Philadelphia,

Jong Seop Lee, will be our special guest as the ship opens this new exhibit.  Jong Seop Lee

has been the Head Consul since September 1, 2020. He joined the Ministry of Foreign

Affairs in 1990 and has served as a diplomat in the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO,

Embassies in Tunisia, Finland, and Algeria, Consulate Generals in Boston and New York.

Mr. Lee is married with two daughters.

Further, the Battleship will hold our inaugural Korean War Living History Day with artifacts

and re-enactors from 11am to 4pm on Saturday in the Officers’ Wardroom.  The ship will also

have some 1950s-era music playing from the ship’s pier speakers!  These activities are free to

experience with the purchase of a tour of the Battleship!
