Job Description
As Volunteer Manager you will coordinate volunteer activities and make sure volunteers have an enjoyable, productive, and safe experience while maintaining the ship or while participating in interpretive programs. Battleship New Jersey has been running a volunteer program for twenty years. It is a top-rated program that sees approximately 150 active volunteers every year and has completed tens of thousands of hours of work for the museum. The program runs every day of the week, but primarily Saturdays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 0700-1100 hours. A volunteer manager is expected to help volunteers fill out their paperwork, maintain files on volunteers, to present reports, ensure new volunteers are trained, work with the maintenance supervisor and curator to come up with projects, and ensure appropriate supplies are on hand.
In addition to maintenance and interpretive volunteers, the Volunteer Manager will also be responsible for managing high school and college interns. The museum’s interns generally complete projects for the Curatorial and Education Department and rotate through on a semester by semester basis. You must be able to work Saturdays and navigate steep ladders and narrow passageways while carrying objects.
Responsibilities
- Recruit new volunteers and interns.
- Work with other members of the department to identify, develop, and monitor projects for volunteers.
- Supervise volunteers and interns.
- Supervise, acquire, set up, and remove maintenance volunteer supplies.
- Supervise training of volunteers and interns and ensure they remain proficient with the information and programs in which they are involved.
- Supervise and maintain volunteer and internship paperwork.
- Ensure staffing of volunteer interpretive programs including captain’s cabin docents and encampments.
- Maintain a database of volunteers and their hours worked.
- Oversee the development of volunteer programs and maintain and distribute the manuals for those programs.
- Monitors the safety of volunteers and interns.
- Coordinate communication between the museum and volunteers.
- Able to give familiarization tours of the ship for potential volunteers and interns.
- Assist other members of the Curatorial and Education department as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Basic maintenance knowledge such as plumbing, electrical, and coatings.
- Comfort with hand and power tools.
- Experience managing staff.
- First aid certification a plus.

- Experience in working with volunteers in a museum or other organization.
- Strong verbal communication and customer service skills.
- Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
- Self-motivated, professional, and detail oriented.
- Flexibility in adjusting to assignment and environment changes.
- Professionalism and attention to detail.
- Ability to work out of doors in adverse weather conditions.
- Military/Naval knowledge helpful.
- Belief in friendly, welcoming environment for creative work balance.
