With daily hours as a museum, the USS New Jersey is the most decorated battleship in U.S. history after being commissioned into the Navy in 1943. Since its retirement, the ship now lives in Camden and has begun a unique way to celebrate the Halloween season after nightfall.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity this time of the year to show some of the skeletal artwork on the ship, and talk about certain parts of the ship that people may not realize has a dark side,” said Jason Hall, vice-president of curator affairs and education at the Battleship New Jersey.
There are plenty haunted walkthroughs, corn mazes, and hayrides throughout the nation, however, this special South Jersey attraction stands out when it comes to Halloween activities.
“The ship is very cool, but also a little spooky at night, so we kind of work well with the Halloween theme,” said Jack Willard, senior vice-president of marketing and sales at the Battleship New Jersey.
Visitors brave enough to explore the battleship after it gets dark get a special tour by flashlight, which includes special artwork the sailors painted on the walls, adult oriented stories of the ships’ history, and a chance to go behind the ropes to check out some hidden spaces
“It’s a little bit different of a look of the Battleship. You’re at night, it’s dark, again, it’s an adult oriented tour, so it’s much different than our day-time tours,” said Willard.
Although no one in costume pops out from the darkness to frighten the guests, USS New Jersey has quite a few ghost stories of her own, that are saved for an adult audience.
“During the Korean war, one of our sailors was actually killed, and our guests during this tour get to stand right where he lost his life defending our nation,” said Hall.
And maybe with the flashlight, you can spot the ghost that some believe roam the halls.
“I personally have not seen anything supernatural on the ship, but some of our staff, guests, and even ghost hunters have come on board and they’ve seen some things,” said Hall.
To experience the moonlight tour, visit the Battleship’s website for tickets, and see its history in a new light.
