Veterans Day Ceremony
The Battleship New Jersey will honor our veterans with a ceremony on the forecastle (forward deck) of the Battleship on Monday, November 11. Visitors may come aboard at 10:45am as the Veterans Day ceremony will commence promptly with the Bell’s of Peace, in which the Ship’s Bell will be rung 11 times at 1100 on November 11.
Background: Bells resound within a grateful nation as we reflect on the service of U.S. military Veterans. Aligning with the anniversary of the end of World War I, bells are traditionally tolled 11 times at 11:00am on November 11 – the moment the Armistice with Germany went into effect. More broadly, the day recognizes the contributions of our Armed Forces to defending and preserving freedom the world over. Citizen groups, along with active duty members of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard, hold special commemoration events at sites across America.
In addition to the ceremony, we will unveil new banners that “Honor Our Heroes” along the promenade. The banners feature veterans and military supporters from the area.
The ceremony, which will be emceed by Capt. Walt Urban USN (Ret.), will feature remarks by John P. Keegan, the President and Chair, Charles Edison Fund. Battleship volunteer Nan LaCorte will perform the National Anthem and TAPS on bugle. Cohesion will be proudly performing a range of patriotic tunes as well. A memorial wreath will be casted upon the Delaware River as the ship salutes our veterans with a blast of her guns.
The ceremony is free to attend. If you’re interested in taking a tour of the Battleship, tickets can be purchased at the Visitor’s Center prior to the ceremony. Veterans can enjoy a self-guided tour of Battleship New Jersey for free. Parking is also free for the day.
