Join the Battleship New Jersey and Independence Seaport Museum for a Deck-to-Deck Tour, where you’ll be able to explore history up close through guided experiences aboard three remarkable ships, prime examples of naval ingenuity:

The Battleship New Jersey

America’s most decorated battleship, she was launched on the first anniversary of Pearl Harbor, and went on to earn distinction during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and conflicts in the Middle East. Beginning with her design in 1938 and ending with her final decommissioning in 1991, Battleship New Jersey has a service record that spans more than half the 20th century.

Submarine Becuna

A Balao-class submarine that served during World War II and the Cold War. She was modernized in 1951 as part of the GUPPY Program, her modifications marking her as a GUPPY 1A type submarine. “Becky” is the only remaining example of a GUPPY 1A type submarine still in existence today.

Cruiser Olympia

The oldest floating steel warship in the world and rose to prominence as Commodore George Dewey’s flagship during the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898. She bore witness to great changes within the Navy and the United States as a whole during her time in service, and finished her career by bringing the Unknown Soldier home from France in 1921 after the end of World War I before being decommissioned for the final time in 1922.

The Deck-to-Deck Tour includes three hours of touring aboard these historic vessels, as well as light refreshments. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at tickets@battleshipnewjersey.org or call us at (866) 877-6262 Ext. 108.

Black Dragon Friday @ Battleship New Jersey
On the Battleship New Jersey, the Friday after Thanksgiving. Nov. 25, is known as “Black Dragon Friday.”
During World War II, the USS New Jersey was nicknamed the “Black Dragon” because of her dark hull and when she fired her 16-inch projectiles, she looked like she was spitting fire.
So instead of Black Friday, we celebrate “Black Dragon Friday” on Nov. 25. And you can celebrate too! All merchandise in our Cafe Store will be available for an additional 10% discount!
And a happy and safe Thanksgiving. To celebrate the holiday, the ship will be closed for tours on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24.

On Saturday, December 10, the Army-Navy Game will return to Philadelphia for the 90th time in the rivalry’s 123-year history. The game kicks off at Lincoln Financial Field as the United States Military Academy (USMA) and the United States Naval Academy (USNA) face-off in America’s Game.

The city anticipates a large influx of more than 50,000 visitors, who will consume more than 31,000 hotel room nights. The weekend also serves as a platform for promoting Philadelphia to millions on national television and the sellout crowd of nearly 70,000 fans that attend the game.

“Army-Navy weekend is all about celebrating America’s armed forces and their service to our country,” said Gregg Caren, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are honored to welcome military families to Philadelphia for the game weekend and to recognize the sacrifices they have made for our nation.”

“The entire city will be electric all weekend as we welcome fans from around the country,” said Larry Needle, executive director of PHL Sports. “This is the 90th year we have had the privilege to host the Academies, and we’re incredibly proud of the legacy we’ve created together.”

In addition to the Academies, the weekend is produced by a number of local partners, including PHL Sports, a business development division of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB), the City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Eagles.
While the Army-Navy Game is the weekend’s focal point, there are events and activities throughout the city leading up to kickoff:
