Battleship to Salute the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle @ Battleship New Jersey

NOTE: THE US COAST GUARD HAS MOVED UP THE TIME FOR THE EAGLE, WHICH IS NOW PROJECTED TO PASS THE BATTLESHIP BETWEEN 11:30AM AND 12:30PM.

The Battleship New Jersey will fire her 5-inch gun to salute the arrival of the US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, which will pass the Battleship between 11:30am to 12:30pm today, Friday, Sept. 27.

All guests touring the Battleship at that time are welcome to watch the Eagle as she passes and the Battleship’s gun salute. Food and beverages will be available to purchase on the Main Deck Portside before and after the Eagles passes.

The majestic sailing ship, the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, provides USCG Academy cadets and officer candidates with their first taste of sea and salt air. Built in Germany in 1936 and re-commissioned by the United States at the close of World War II, the EAGLE is the largest active tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes. The Eagle will dock at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia for the weekend.

How did sailors manage in the cold weather?

During World War II, the ship’s heating was not nearly as good as it is today, try on some of their coats and hats, and see for yourself if you can keep warm. Throughout her history, the ship spent most of her time in warm climates, avoiding the chill by staying near the equator; however, she couldn’t avoid it all together, including a particularly cold commissioning ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia in November of 1950.

Ceremony for the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima @ Battleship New Jersey

In continuation of the Battleship New Jersey’s commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the ship will host a ceremony at 9:30am on Saturday, Feb. 22. The keynote speaker will be WWII veteran and a participant in the Battle of Iwo Jima, Frank Beach. The Battleship will remember our military heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice with the casting a wreath into the Delaware River, a 21-gun salute by the PFC Daniel Giordano Marine Detachment Rifle Team, and the performance of TAPs on bugle.

The ceremony will take place in the Officers’ Wardroom and is free for guests to attend.

Further, the Battleship will be real-time posting on Twitter some of the events of the Battle of Iwo Jima on Feb. 17.

The American goal of the battle was to gain control of the island and its airfields to allow the Americans to have a staging location in order to attack the Japanese main islands. Over five weeks, this battle had some of the bloodiest fighting of the war in the Pacific. During the battle, New Jersey participated in the shore bombardment of the island

The Battleship Blitz is coming!

Beginning at 7pm on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 15, the Battleship will feature unique videos each weeknight through Friday, March 12, on the Battleship’s YouTube channel. The video will show the amazing history and spaces aboard our nation’s most decorated and largest battleship! We’ll also have USS New Jersey veterans, Battleship volunteers and other VIPs introduce the videos each evening!
