The USS New Jersey was commissioned for Vietnam on April 6, 1968.  She was the only battleship that saw action off the coast of Vietnam in 1968.  Guests touring the Battleship can experience an exhibit that features her commission as part of the Battleship’s Fire Power Tour.

Re-enactment of Capt. Peniston “Firepower for Freedom” Speech on Dec. 17 @ Battleship New Jersey
Dec 17 @ 11:00 am – 11:30 am
Re-enactment of Capt. Peniston "Firepower for Freedom" Speech on Dec. 17 @ Battleship New Jersey
On December 17, 1969, Captain Robert Peniston decommissioned the Battleship New Jersey for the third time. At the time, the New Jersey was the only active battleship in the world and many feared that there would  never be more battleships again. New Jersey and her crew had been off the coast of Vietnam only a few months before this decommissioning and many credit the ship for saving American lives on shore.
At the decommissioning ceremony, Captain Peniston said farewell to a ship that meant so much to so many, “Rest well, yet sleep lightly, and hear the call, if again sounded, to provide ‘Firepower for Freedom.”
A reenactment of Peniston’s speech as well as some words from the ship’s curator will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 17 on the Forecastle at 11:00. Free with Museum Admission.

Fire Power Tours Are Back! Beginning Thursday, July 2 @ Battleship New Jersey

The Battleship’s signature tour — the Fire Power Tour — is back! The Fire Power self-guided tour will re-open for guests on Thursday, July 2,

Guests can experience the interior spaces of the Battleship again! Track a tomahawk missile in the Combat Engagement Center, look in at the engine rooms along Broadway, check out artifacts in the Exhibit area, climb into a bunk to learn what life was like aboard this floating city, and more! Tours will still include the exterior decks, with highlights like the 16-inch gun turret, the tomahawk missile launch boxes, the Seasprite helicopter and more. The interior of the Battleship is air conditioned and with the nice breezes off the Delaware River when you are outside on the exterior decks, the Battleship is a cool experience!

The Fire Power self-guided tour will be a timed tour to promote distance between guests touring the ship. All guests still must pass a health screening, which includes a contactless thermometer temperature check, in the Visitors Center before purchasing or redeeming their ticket. All guests must wear a face covering and practice social distancing of one fathom — six feet — in the Visitors Center and while touring the Battleship. The tour route of the Battleship, along with the Visitors Center, will be continuously cleaned and disinfected by the Battleship’s housekeeping personnel.

Fire Power self-guided tours will be available every day, beginning Thursday, July 2, from 10am with the last tour launching at 4pm.

We recommend purchasing tickets in advance on our website at https://www.battleshipnewjersey.org/visit/purchase-tickets/ Tickets can be purchased the day of your tour at the Ticket Office inside the Battleship’s Visitors Center.
