On May 23, 1943, the USS New Jersey was commissioned into the United State Navy at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The Battleship will celebrate the 75th anniversary of her Commissioning with a ceremony on the forecastle (forward deck) at 10am on May 23. This event will feature key remarks from regional dignitaries and USS New Jersey veterans. The Battleship will formally dedicate the recently re-installed Quad 40 Gun. We’ll also have live music, including a rendition of TAPS by Battleship volunteer and bugler Nan Lacorte, a memorial wreath casting, and even cake for all guests as part of the morning’s activities.
Kids can get a treat for Halloween, Wed., Oct. 31, with a tour of the Battleship, open from 9:30am to 3pm. Just stop by our Ship’s Store and get your candy, courtesy of LMS Vending Solutions. For info on their vending services, visit http://www.lmsvend.com/
Did you know that Thomas Edison was awarded a Navy Distinguished Service Medal? In the inaugural Little Lights by the Edison Foundation, we are learning about the electric telegraph.
Our latest exhibit, USS New Jersey: Past, Present and Future, will be our focus for this 90 minute program where we will look at how the original USS New Jersey, BB16 from 1906 – 1920 communicated. This program is designed for preschoolers and their families, and includes a tour of the new exhibit and a hands on activity of how to use a telegraph.
The activity will take place in the Officers’ Wardroom beginning at 10am on Jan. 11. Free with ticketed admission. Pre-Registration highly suggested, space is limited: L.Jones@BattleshipNewJersey.org
