Author Presentation on Adm. Nimitz @ Battleship New Jersey
Author Dr. Craig L. Symonds will talk about his new book, scheduled to be released in Spring 2022, on Adm. Chester W. Nimitz. Dr. Symonds will provide insights into the career of Adm. Nimitz through WWII and as Chief of Naval Operations from 1945 until 1947.
The presentation by Dr. Symonds, which will take place in the Officers’ Wardroom on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 11:30am, is free to attend with the purchase of a tour of the Battleship. The ship is open for tours daily from 11am to 3pm in October.
Dr. Symonds is a Professor Emeritus of History at the United States Naval Academy. During a thirty-year teaching career at the Academy, including a four-year term as Department Chair, Symonds was the first person to win both the Academy’s “Excellence in Teaching” award (1988) and its “Excellence in Research” award (1998). Symonds is the author or editor of twenty-nine books, including Decision at Sea: Five Naval Battles that Shaped American History, NEPTUNE: The Allied Invasion of Europe and the D-Day Landings (2014) and World War II at Sea: A Global History (Oxford).

Student Day: Building the Canal @ Battleship New Jersey

A special day of education for students and their parents aboard the ship.

Take a deep dive into Battleship New Jersey’s Captain Menocal and learn about his grandfather, Aniceto Menocal, the chief surveyor for the construction of the Panama Canal. Learn why the canal was such a critical component of the navy’s tactics in World War II and try planning your own route from the Atlantic to the Pacific then, with the size restraints put in place by the canal, see if you can build a battleship that’s under budget and underweight but can still do the job. This program includes a tour of the ship where you can see the design choices made in order to fit New Jersey through the canal as well as the tour of the captain’s stateroom to see where the younger Menocal lived while on board.

Admission is a $5 donation for all.

A special day of education for students and their parents aboard the Battleship New Jersey.

In celebration of Native American Heritage month, learn about one of New Jersey’s admirals, JJ “Jocko” Clark. Clark was born in the Cherokee Nation in the 1890s in what was then described as “Indian Country” and is now known as Oklahoma before going to the Naval Academy, earning his pilot’s wings, and fighting in both World Wars and the Korean War. Between the World Wars, Admiral Clark tested planes that would be used by the Navy during the Second World War. In 1953, Admiral Clark commanded 7th Fleet from New Jersey and was present for the signing of the Armistice ending the Korean War hostilities. In this program designed for elementary school aged students, guests will build their own aircraft to learn about aerodynamics and take a tour of the ship to see where Admiral Clark commanded from.

Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration Ceremony @ Battleship New Jersey
Camden and Gloucester counties will partner on the annual Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration event on the fantail of the Battleship New Jersey at 10am on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Local dignitaries, veterans, live music by the Eastern High School Marching Band, and a memorial wreath presentation will be part of the ceremony, which is free for guests to attend.
