Join Battleship educators for a socially distanced day of learning aboard the Big J!

On Wednesday, February 24th, at 9am, guests can experience a guided tour of the Battleship and a classroom-style lesson.  This month’s class will feature the science behind aerodynamics, rockets, and missiles. Students will be challenged to create their own air powered rocket and see if they can hit their target.  This program is appropriate for all school-aged children.

  • Adults are required to stay with children for their entire visit.
  • All guests must pass a health screening which includes a contactless temperature check, wear a face covering and practice social distancing of six feet at all times.

Curator-led Tour Featuring Iowa Class Battleships in Combat, Fri., Feb. 26 @ Battleship New Jersey

Join our curator for a special guided tour of the ship focusing on the battle of Truk Lagoon.

On February 16, 1944, at 1547, USS New Jersey opened fire opened fire with her main battery on an enemy ship.
Guests will go through the ship’s 6in armored deck into the citadel that protects the most essential components of the ship. Once inside the citadel, guests will see the inside of a 16in gun turret and the Mk 8 electro-mechanical analog computer that fired these guns over the ship’s fifty years of service. Guests will also take a look into the rarely seen gun director that helped aim these guns.

Join our curator for a special guided tour of the ship focusing on the technological changes to the ship over time.

Guests will go see some of the ship’s original Anti-aircraft weaponry as well as the more modern anti-missile technology. From the Combat Information Center where the ship found its targets for the 16in guns to the Combat Engagement Center added in the 1980s for missiles, guests will see what additions were made to the ship over her 50 year history to keep the ship in fighting condition.

Join Battleship educators for a socially distanced day of learning aboard the Big J!

On Wednesday, March 24, at 9am, students and their parents can experience a guided tour of the Battleship and a classroom-style lesson. This two-hour session will talk about some of the technology added to the ship over her 50 years of service, including both kinds of drones that the ship worked with. Students will learn the basics of circuitry and then be challenged to create their own small robot capable of traveling on its own.  The tour will focus on the changes made to the ship over the years and will visit the early Anti-aircraft guns as well as the 1980s computers. This program is appropriate for all school-aged children.

  • Adults are required to stay with children for their entire visit.
  • All guests must pass a health screening which includes a contactless temperature check, wear a face covering and practice social distancing of six feet at all times.

LEARN ABOUT BATTLESHIP DESIGN IN THIS MONTH’S STUDENT DAY

On Wednesday, May 26, at 9am, students and their parents can experience a guided tour of the Battleship and a classroom-style lesson.

Can you do a better job designing a battleship than the men who designed USS New Jersey?  Look at the various parts that go into building a massive warship and examine the three  primary components of a battleship: massive propulsion, impenetrable armor, and unrivaled firepower. Use this knowledge and mathematics to design your own battleship factoring in the problems that the designers of real ships faced.

Tickets are a $5 donation and all students must be accompanied by a parent.

This program is recommended for grades 3-8.

Celebrate the 4th of July with a bang aboard the Battleship New Jersey!

The Battleship has extended our saluting gun salutes to Sunday, July 4 from 12pm to 2pm.  This is in addition to our regular salutes we do each Saturday from 12pm to 2pm.  Just a $50 donation allows you to pull the trigger to fire a salute from our portside (Philadelphia-side) saluting gun!

Come out to the Battleship in the evening of Sunday, July 4 and experience the amazing view of the Camden County fireworks show over the Delaware River!  The Battleship will have live music, food concessions, bar service — including samples of Battleship Rum for adults — balloon animals and the opportunity to win the chance to fire our 5-inch gun at the conclusion of the fireworks show!

Just a $10 donation gets you aboard for fireworks on July 4!  The Battleship’s deck will open at 7pm; fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30pm.

Join Battleship educators for a day of learning aboard the Big J!

On Wednesday, July 28, at 9am, students and their parents can experience a guided tour of the Battleship and a classroom-style lesson.

This month the tour will include the main battery 16-inch guns, the plotting room used to aim the guns, and the Combat Information Center, where targets were selected. Guests will also have the chance to do the math by hand and figure out how to find the distance to an enemy target.

Admission is a $5 donation for all. Adults are required to stay with children for their entire visit.

This program is recommended for grades 3-8.

How does a battleship stand up to the rock and rolling of the ocean and pressure of the guns? Can you build something that can stand up to the test? Join Battleship Educators on August 18th at 9:00 AM for a tour of the ship and an activity. This month’s tour will include a visit to the bridge where the ship was steered from, a look at the ship’s expansion joint that allows it to flex in the waves, and a look at the damage the ship took from the concussion of the ship’s guns over 50 years ago!

A special day of education for students and their parents aboard the ship.

How does the ship’s navigator know that the water is deep enough for a battleship? Or if the ship can fit under a particular bridge? Navigational charts are maps of waterways. Learn to read them and test your skills to see if you can safely navigate New Jersey into port! Join Battleship Educators for a tour of the ship and an activity. This month’s tour will include a visit to the ship’s navigation bridge and chart house as well as the opportunity to raise signal flags to signify that the battleship plans to alter course.

Guided Fire Power Tour on Indigenous Peoples Day @ Battleship New Jersey
Experience a guided Fire Power Tour on Indigenous People’s Day/Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 11 at 12pm.
Our trained tour guide will lead you through the Forecastle (forward deck), Combat Engagement Center, the crew’s berthing areas and more.
Guided Tours are available Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at 12pm. The price is $35 for adults and $30 for veterans, senior citizens and children under 12.
The Battleship is open for self-guided tours every day from 11am to 3pm.

A special day of education for students and their parents aboard the ship.

Take a deep dive into Battleship New Jersey’s Captain Menocal and learn about his grandfather, Aniceto Menocal, the chief surveyor for the construction of the Panama Canal. Learn why the canal was such a critical component of the navy’s tactics in World War II and try planning your own route from the Atlantic to the Pacific then, with the size restraints put in place by the canal, see if you can build a battleship that’s under budget and underweight but can still do the job. This program includes a tour of the ship where you can see the design choices made in order to fit New Jersey through the canal as well as the tour of the captain’s stateroom to see where the younger Menocal lived while on board.

Join a knowledgeable tour guide in a 90-minute, family friendly, walking tour that takes guests through the five stories of one of Battleship New Jersey’s massive 16″ gun turrets. Visitors will get to stand in the armored gun house where the gun captain oversaw reloading procedures, explore the magazines where 1-ton shells and thousands of powder bags were stored, and pull the triggers in the plotting room where primitive but effective computers aimed the guns over the horizon. This fun for all ages experience includes many hands-on elements that let’s guests see and feel what it was like for a World War II crew member to fire the ship’s guns. Tickets are limited and will sell out quickly.

A special day of education for students and their parents aboard the Battleship New Jersey.

In celebration of Native American Heritage month, learn about one of New Jersey’s admirals, JJ “Jocko” Clark. Clark was born in the Cherokee Nation in the 1890s in what was then described as “Indian Country” and is now known as Oklahoma before going to the Naval Academy, earning his pilot’s wings, and fighting in both World Wars and the Korean War. Between the World Wars, Admiral Clark tested planes that would be used by the Navy during the Second World War. In 1953, Admiral Clark commanded 7th Fleet from New Jersey and was present for the signing of the Armistice ending the Korean War hostilities. In this program designed for elementary school aged students, guests will build their own aircraft to learn about aerodynamics and take a tour of the ship to see where Admiral Clark commanded from.

Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration Ceremony @ Battleship New Jersey
Camden and Gloucester counties will partner on the annual Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration event on the fantail of the Battleship New Jersey at 10am on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Local dignitaries, veterans, live music by the Eastern High School Marching Band, and a memorial wreath presentation will be part of the ceremony, which is free for guests to attend.
