How does a 57,000 ton battleship float? How do you hit a target over the horizon? How does a steam engine work? Find out the answer to these questions and more on STEM Day aboard the Battleship. Look at the science of communication, the technological changes to the ship’s guns, engineer a system to repair battle damage, learn the art of a radio broadcast, do the math to get your projectile on target and more!
STEM Day will take place from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, October 12. Throughout the Battleship and in the Visitors Center at the WWII Japanese Periscoper, guests can experience additional educational activities designed for elementary students to learn more about how the ship operates.
Guests can build their own periscope, presented by Edmund Optics, at the Japanese Periscope in the Visitors Center. Learn about navigation on the Bridge. Participate in an exercise in mechanical advantage using the I beam system will take place on Broadway. Other activities include How Boats Float, Rockets, and Circuit Block activities. Building History will still be going with the science of communication. There will be a project on the science of projectiles as well. Radio Club will be in.
All educational exercises are free to experience with a tour of the Battleship.
