Building History Will Build Boats in August

Building History Will Build Boats in August
For August, Building History’s project is Concrete Boats.  During World War II, the United States was building large amounts of ships, guns, and other tools for war. Limited amounts of steel forced the Navy to get creative and led them to experiment with making ships out of concrete. Why was the battleship made of steel instead of concrete? Find out and test to see if you can make your own boat out of various materials.
Building History activities, which are in addition to a tour of the Battleship, will take place every Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 5pm on the main deck outside of Turret 1 on the port side, or, if raining, in crew’s mess.

Pool Party on the Battleship! @ Battleship New Jersey

Pool Party on the Battleship! @ Battleship New Jersey

In 1967, while the USS New Jersey was being reactivated for the Vietnam War, 40mm anti-aircraft guns were removed.  To save time and money, the tubs, where the guns were housed, were left in place. Captain J. Edward Snyder Jr., always sensitive to crew morale, thought the empty gun tubs, on either side of his cabin, would make perfect swimming pools.

As a remembrance to the Capt. Snyder’s swimming pools, the Battleship added a pool on the portside of the 01 deck, where one of the original pools was. The top photo shows Capt. Snyder in the pool in 1968.  The photo beneath shows Curator Ryan Szimanski floating in the pool from last year.
Bring your bathing suit and take a dip in the Battleship pool!  We are opening the pool for swimming on Saturday and Sunday, August 17 & 18 and August 24 & 24, 9:30am to 5pm, weather permitting.
Free to enjoy for members, or with the purchase of any tour of the Battleship New Jersey.
