The Battleship is excited to have commissioned Camden artist William Butler to create a unique artwork of his impression of the Battleship New Jersey. William has been working on the painting, which will be unveiled during the Battleship’s annual Adm. Halsey Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 11. Bidding will end at 8pm on May 23, the 80th anniversary of the Commissioning of the USS New Jersey into the US Navy.
Own this unique piece of art and help the Battleship. All proceeds from the bid for the art go to the on-going maintenance of the Battleship New Jersey, a non-profit museum and memorial.

The Battleship will be the end point of the annual Heores Wreath Motorcycle Ride on Sunday, May 21 Several hundred bikes will park on the pier and landside. Riders will enjoy a self-guided tour of the Battleship, lunch catered by Mission BBQ and live music on the fantail.
Meet will be at the “Old” Philadelphia Police Academy, 8501 State Road, Philadelphia, PA at 9am. Ride will begin at 11am.

In conjunction with the Anniversary of the New Jersey’s Commissioning Ceremony on May 23, the Battleship will also unveil 22 new banners of Heroes who served or helped our military from our region. The new banners will be on display along the Battleship’s Promenade. A booklet with details on all of the Banner Honorees will be available for free in the Visitors Center.
The ceremony, which will take place on the fantail on Tuesday, May 23 at 11am, is free to attend.

USS New Jersey Commissioning Anniversary/Veteran Banners Unveiling
Tuesday, May 23, 11am
The Battleship will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Commissioning of the USS New Jersey and the unveiling of new banners honoring veterans from the region and the Battleship with a ceremony on Tuesday, May 23 at 11am.
The event will feature remarks from
- Author and historian Paul Stillwell,
- WWII USS New Jersey veteran William “Bill” Ryan,
- Capt Louis Ivey, USN (Ret), the first African-American Officer on the New Jersey,
- VADM Douglas Katz, Commanding Officer of the New Jersey from 1987-1989,
- Capt. Mark Easton, USN (Ret), crewmember on the New Jersey during the 1980s,
- Rear Adm. Samuel Cox, USN (Ret), former Commander of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). and current Director, Naval History and Heritage Command and Curator of the Navy.
Capt. Walter M. Urban, USN (Ret), will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Live performance of “God Bless America” by Maria Discuuillo, and the National Anthem and TAPS performed by the Battleship’s Bugler, volunteer Nan LaCorte.
This free ceremony will also feature veterans. live patriot music performance and even birthday cake as we celebrate the Battleship’s 80th year and honor veteran and supporters .

The Battleship will team up with Camden County and the Knights of Columbus to host a free ceremony to remember our military heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The ceremony will take place on the ship’s fantail.
The key note speaker for this free ceremony will be Con. Donald Norcross. The National Anthem and TAPS will be performed by bugler Bill McLean. A Memorial Wreath will be casted upon the Delaware River to honor our military heroes.
The ceremony will begin at 10am on the Battleship’s fantail, tented rear deck.

The Battleship New Jersey will hold a ceremony on the history of Flag Day, as well as a live demonstration of the proper way to retire a tattered US flag. This free event will take place at 10am on Wednesday, June 14, on land with the Battleship as the backdrop.
Guests may bring their tattered flags to the Battleship. All flags will be retired properly.
All kids will also get a mini US flag as part of their tour of the Battleship on Flag Day, June 14.

The 11th annual Camden Residents Scholarship Awards Dinner will take place in the Officers’ Wardroom on Thursday, June 15 at 6pm. This dinner will award students who reside in Camden with $2000 scholarships — an additional $1000 from past scholarship awards — to be used for their education as they move forward in their academic career.
The Battleship has awarded 100 Camden students a total of $100,000 in scholarships over the past 10 years. As we move into our next decade of scholarships, the Battleship has increased the award per student to $2000 to further help them with their educational expenses.
The Battleship has recently contacted Camden area schools regarding participating in this program. Teachers from the schools identified students moving forward in their academic career for the Battleship scholarship. One student from ten Camden-area high schools and secondary schools will receive the scholarship, which will be awarded on the Battleship on June 15.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial will welcome 34 new U.S. citizens during a special Independence Day naturalization ceremony Tuesday, July 4 at 10am. USCIS Mt. Laurel Field Office Director Keith Dorr will administer the Oath of Allegiance, and other officials will offer welcoming and congratulatory remarks to the new citizens.
The 34 citizenship candidates originate from the following 21 countries: Afghanistan, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, St. Lucia, Togo, United Kingdom and Vietnam. Among the candidates, three are currently serving in the U.S. military.
This ceremony is part of USCIS’ annual Independence Day celebration of our nation’s 247th birthday and the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. USCIS will welcome new U.S. citizens at Independence Day-themed naturalization ceremonies across the country.
USCIS often participates in naturalization ceremonies at museums, schools, libraries and other notable locations to celebrate the conclusion of an immigrant’s journey to citizenship and honor their commitment. Ceremonies in honor of national holidays or significant historic anniversaries — like Independence Day — connect new citizens with our nation’s past, while welcoming them as part of America’s future.
Battleship New Jersey (BB-62) is the most decorated battleship in Navy history, earning distinction in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and conflicts in the Middle East. The New Jersey’s history spans over half the 20th century, from her design in 1938 until 1991. Today the New Jersey continues her service as a living museum and memorial.
USCIS encourages new U.S. citizens and guests to share their naturalization experiences on social media using the hashtag #NewUSCitizen.

Philadelphia Union, in partnership with Boeing, announced they will honor Military Appreciation with their annual Battle of the Branches 5v5 mini-soccer tournament on July 13, which will take place on the deck of the Battleship New Jersey.
In addition to the tournament, the event will conclude with a party with food and beverage and on the deck of the battleship.
The Union invites all active-duty military, as well as retired, reserve, DOD civilians, and friends and family playing in honor or memory of military members, in the Philadelphia-area, to assemble teams and compete in the tournament. There is no cost to register, and each player will receive a shirt, access to a meal and one drink ticket.
