Online and Onboard Class on the USS Mason Through February @ Battleship New Jersey
Throughout February to celebrate African-American History Month, the Battleship will offer a class on the USS Mason, which had a predominantly African-American crew and was an example of desegregation in the navy.
The onboard class is free to any small group who schedule a safe tour of the Battleship in February. Groups must be less than 30 people, allow us to break the group into smaller, safer groups of 10 people maximum, pass our health screening, wear a face mask and practice social distancing of one fathom – six feet — when aboard the ship. The classes will also be a maximum of 10 people socially distanced.
The class on the USS Mason is also available as part of the Battleship’s Distance Learning program. Let our curatorial staff conduct the lesson live online to students in their classroom.
To schedule a group tour and class, or a distance learning class, email groups@battleshipnewjersey.org or call 866-877-6262 x144

Teak eBay Auction
Feb 5 @ 7:00 pm – Feb 15 @ 7:00 pm
Teak eBay Auction

This 4-plank triangular slab of our original teak decking is approximately 49″ long x 19″ wide with rubberized caulk between the planks.

This teak was removed from the main deck on the starboard side of turret 3, the aft 16″/50cal gun, during a major restoration of that area performed in January of 2021.  Judging by the area it was removed from, the method of installation and the coatings on the steel underneath, it is possible that this teak was on board during World War II. It was likely installed in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard either while the ship was originally being built or during a major reactivation in 1968 for service during the Vietnam War.  This deck protected the armor plate underneath from damage by the 1-ton shells, which were carted over it when ammunition was loaded and insulated several generations of American fighting men from the South Pacific sun while they ate their meals in the mess decks below.

Certificate of authenticity will be included.

March is Red Cross Month @ Battleship New Jersey

March is Red Cross Month @ Battleship New Jersey

The Battleship New Jersey raised the flag of the Red Cross on March 1 and will fly the flag over the ship throughout the month of March for Red Cross Month.  The Battleship will also be lit throughout March.

The Battleship kicked off Red Cross Month with a virtual ceremony on Facebook on March 1.  In addition to raising the flag, the ceremony including the performance of the National Anthem by Battleship volunteer and bugler Nan LaCorte, the firing of the portside saluting gun and a memorial wreath casting for Red Cross staff member Laura Steinmetz, who was instrumental in organizing the Red Cross annual kick-off events aboard the Battleship.

March has been recognized as Red Cross Month for more than 75 years. Beginning with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943, every U.S. President has designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the American Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world.
