Free Class on USS Mason
School classes that schedule a guided tour of the Battleship in January or February can get a free onboard class on the USS Mason, a predominantly African-American crew and a historic example of integration by the Navy.
Did you know that the USS New Jersey had the privilege of being commanded by the first African-American Admiral in the U.S. Navy.
In 1996, Admiral J. Paul Reason was awarded the rank of 4-star admiral, making him the first Black admiral in the U.S. Navy.
Joseph Paul Reason, the last admiral to break his flag onboard New Jersey, was born in Washington DC in 1941 to academic parents. He was an accomplished student and was accepted to the Naval Academy Class of 1965. Following graduation, he had his first sea duty assignment, returned to shore for successive nuclear power schools and training, and again returned to sea duty in 1968 during the Vietnam War.
After a number of sea and shore assignments in the early 1970s, Reason was assigned as Naval Aide to the President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, in 1976. By 1991, he had attained the rank of rear admiral and made New Jersey his flagship during operations in the Pacific commanding Battle Group Romeo.
