A native of Great Britain, this will be his second time aboard the Battleship. Drach hosts the most successful naval history channel on YouTube. The Battleship New Jersey and the Independence Seaport Museum will kick-off a year-long lecture series with a special round table presentation aboard the Battleship on Feb. 11 at 7pm in the Officers’ Wardroom.
YouTube influcencer Drachinifel, USS Salem volunteer Dr. Scholes and Battleship Curator Ryan Szimanski will lead discussions on these topics:
- How the last Allied battleship designed compared, specifically looking at USS New Jersey and HMS Vanguard.
- What if the USS Salem (CA 139) played Graf Spee in the movie, “Pursuit of the Graf Spee,” in the UK, “Battle of the River Plate.”
- How and why the HMS Hood was destroyed, further advances on timing and methodology.
- Why advanced radar made very long range ship to ship gunnery practical in the latter part of WWII and after.
- And more!

Battleship University is fun and educational experience, which will include eight hours of walking tours of different parts of the ship and classroom programs, including spaces only the curator can take you to. From learning how the gun crew manned the 16-inch guns to firing a 5-inch gun and walking through the engineering plant with a Navy trained Boiler Technician, to a class on how to identify different types of World War II and modern warships, this is the most in-depth tour of an Iowa-class battleship you can get.
The price is a $350 donation per person.
This is a members-only program and has a limited capacity. Members will receive an email with a link to the registration page with more details and a code that will allow you to sign up. Not a member yet? Visit www.battleshipnewjersey.org/membership to join.
Experience an “adult-oriented” tour during the evening hours! The 11th annual Camden Residents Scholarship Awards Dinner will take place in the Officers’ Wardroom on Thursday, June 8 at 6pm. This dinner will award students who reside in Camden with $2000 scholarships — an additional $1000 from past scholarship awards — to be used for their education as they move forward in their academic career.
The Battleship has awarded 100 Camden students a total of $100,000 in scholarships over the past 10 years. As we move into our next decade of scholarships, the Battleship has increased the award per student to $2000 to further help them with their educational expenses.
The Battleship has recently contacted Camden area schools regarding participating in this program. Teachers from the schools will identify students moving forward in their academic career for the Battleship scholarship. One student from ten Camden-area high schools and secondary schools will receive the scholarship, which will be awarded on the Battleship on June 8.
Any interested teachers or administrators from Camden area schools should contact the Battleship at 856-966-1652 ext. 144.
