Hands On History Features Foul Weather Gear for January @ Battleship New Jersey
How did sailors manage in the cold weather?
During World War II, the ship’s heating was not nearly as good as it is today, try on some of their coats and hats, and see for yourself if you can keep warm. Throughout her history, the ship spent most of her time in warm climates, avoiding the chill by staying near the equator; however, she couldn’t avoid it all together, including a particularly cold commissioning ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia in November of 1950.
Check our actual Navy foul weather gear in the Captain’s In-port Cabin throughout the month of January as part of the Fire Power tour.

Building History in January: Navigation @ Battleship New Jersey
Jan 11 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Building History in January: Navigation @ Battleship New Jersey
In honor of our new exhibit, USS New Jersey: Past, Present and Future, this month’s Building History project is focused on the first USS New Jersey, BB-16, which was in commission from 1906 to 1920, and the new submarine, SSN-796.
While many things were the same across all three ships, the biggest differences were in the technology. In this program you can learn how to navigate using a sextant and look at charts of the places that both battleships visited. You can also make your own periscope, something that not just the newest New Jersey, an attack submarine, has.
Every Saturday and Sunday in January, in the Crew’s Mess.  Free with Admission.
Little Lights by the Edison Foundation @ Battleship New Jersey
Jan 11 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Little Lights by the Edison Foundation @ Battleship New Jersey
Did you know that Thomas Edison was awarded a Navy Distinguished Service Medal? In the inaugural Little Lights by the Edison Foundation, we are learning about the electric telegraph.
Our latest exhibit, USS New Jersey: Past, Present and Future, will be our focus for this 90 minute program where we will look at how the original USS New Jersey, BB16 from 1906 – 1920 communicated. This program is designed for preschoolers and their families, and includes a tour of the new exhibit and a hands on activity of how to use a telegraph.
The activity will take place in the Officers’ Wardroom beginning at 10am on Jan. 11.  Free with ticketed admission. Pre-Registration highly suggested, space is limited: L.Jones@BattleshipNewJersey.org

Hands On History: Adm. Reason and Ensign Ivey @ Battleship New Jersey
Feb 1 @ 9:30 am – Feb 29 @ 3:00 pm
Hands On History: Adm. Reason and Ensign Ivey @ Battleship New Jersey

The Battleship will honor Ensign Louis Ivey and Admiral Paul Reason for Hands On History in February.

Ensign Ivey was initially assigned to the boiler division. Visitors can hold a fuel nozzle from one of the ship’s boiler rooms. One of those boiler rooms is on the Engineering Steam to Speed Tour that launches every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00. Ivey was later the division officer for the New Jersey’s radiomen, so we have a Gibson Girl Radio like the one that would have been on the ship with Ivey during the 1950s.

Admiral Reason, who led Battle Group Romeo from the Battleship in the 1980s, later wrote a book called Sailing New Seas about naval tactics that visitors can look through. The cruisebook from 1989 that includes Reason, is also on display.

Presidents Day Weekend on the Battleship @ Battleship New Jersey

Presidents Day Weekend on the Battleship @ Battleship New Jersey
This Presidents Day Weekend, walk the decks that Presidents walked! Even check out President Ronald Reagan’s flag, on display in the Officers’ Wardroom.

The Battleship has also added the guided Engineering Steam to Speed Tour at 11am and the guided Turret II Tour at 1pm on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 17.

Further, on Monday, Feb. 17, the Battleship will recognize the 76th Anniversary of Operation Hailstorm. On Feb. 17 and 18, 1944, there was a massive air and surface strike on Truk Lagoon. This would be the first time that the Battleship New Jersey would fire her 16-inch guns in anger. To commemorate this event, we will be posting in real time on Twitter the events of the battleship and of others involved. Additionally, Curator Ryan Szimanski will be leading the 1 pm Turret II tour, which will be longer than usual and discuss Operation Hailstone in addition to talking about the 16-inch guns. The lecture is free for members and all guests with Fire Power self-guided tour tickets. The lecture will be live-streamed on our Facebook page. Members get 30% off the Turret II tour.

Finally, each day during Presidents Day Weekend, guests can register to win the DVD “The Ultimate Guide to the Presidents,” donated by The History Channel. Guests can enter in the Ship’s Store.
