Battleship to Welcome USS John P. Murtha with a Saluting Blast on Monday                      WITH A SALUTING BLAST

DATE:            Monday, October 3    11am

DETAILS:     The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial will welcome the newest Navy ship, the USS John P. Murtha, with a saluting blast on Monday, Oct. 3 at approximately 11am.

The USS Murtha will be commissioned as the newest ship in the US Navy during a formal  shipboard commissioning on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia, the port just a few hours east on I-76 from Congressman Murtha’s district in Cambria County, PA.  The commissioning will not only honor Pennsylvania’s longest serving         congressman and decorated combat veteran, it will also form an enduring alliance between the people of the congressman’s district and the ship and her crew.

The USS John P. Murtha is a versatile San Antonio-class ship that incorporates both a flight deck to accommodate CH-46 helicopters and MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, and a well deck that can launch and recover landing craft and amphibious vehicles. The San Antonio class’ increased vehicle space and substantial cargo carrying capacity makes it a key element of twenty-first century Amphibious Ready Groups, Expeditionary Strike                             Groups, and Joint Task Forces.

John P. Murtha’s keel was laid down on June 6, 2012 at Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula,                               Mississippi. She was launched on October 30, 2014, with her christening on March 21, 2015. Donna S. Murtha, the congressman’s daughter, is the ship’s sponsor. In addition to performing their primary mission,  USS John P. Murtha’s sister ships have supported anti-piracy operations and provided humanitarian assistance and foreign disaster relief operations in Haiti after the earthquake.

Guests touring the Battleship on Monday, Oct. 3, are welcome to witness the saluting gun blast on the portside (Philadelphia side) of the ship at approximately 11am.  The Battleship is open for walk-up tours from 9:30am to 3pm.
