TIME: Begins Saturday, August 1 and will run every day for a limited time
DETAILS: The Battleship New Jersey will extend the current Fire Power self-guided tour, with a free 20-minute guided
Tour of the ship’s Engine Room, beginning Saturday, August 1 from 11am to 3pm.
The free extended tour will begin in the crew’s mess, which is near the end of the current Fire Power tour.
Guests will get to walk through both fire room two with two of the ship’s eight boilers and engine room two
with one of the ship’s turbine units that turns one of the four propellers and two turbo generators, which create
electrical power for some of the 1,000 motors on the ship.
Guests will see the throttle board where speed was controlled and burners where fuel consumption was
controlled. They will get to go down to the hold and look up at one of the ship’s massive propeller shafts.
But hurry to take advantage of the free extended Engine Room tour. It will only be available for a limited time.
This engineering tour is made possible through the generous support of Lockheed Martin and the Henry M. Rowan Family Foundation.
To celebrate the addition of the Engine Room tour, the Battleship will offer salutes throughout the day. Guests
touring the ship will be randomly drawn to pull the trigger to fire the portside (Philadelphia-side) saluting gun on
the hour from 11am to 3pm.
Want to guarantee you’ll fire the saluting gun? A $50 donation to the Battleship, a non-profit museum and
memorial, will allow the donor to fire the gun any time on Saturday.
The Battleship is continuously cleaned and disinfected. All guests, as well as Battleship employees, must pass a
health check which includes a contactless temperature check, must wear a face covering and practice social
distancing of six feet while at the Battleship.
