Battleship Remembers the Battle of Leyte Gulf with Ceremony and Discussion

The Ship will Host a Ceremony and Discussion for the 75th Anniversary of the Battle     

PLACE:         Forecastle/Officers’ Wardroom, Battleship New Jersey, Camden Waterfront, NJ

TIME:            11am, Saturday, October 26, 2019

DETAILS:     To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the largest naval battle ever fought, the Battleship

New Jersey will hold a ceremony on the forecastle at 11am on Oct. 26, followed by a

Panel Discussion about Leyte Gulf in the Officers’ Wardroom at approximately 11:30am.

Both events are free to attend.

 

The ceremony, emceed by Capt. Walt Urban, USN (ret) and the Military Liaison Officer

for the Battleship,  will feature an overview of the battle by the Battleship’s Curator, Ryan

Szimanski, and recollections of WWII by Navy veteran and Battleship volunteer John

Quinesso.  The ceremony will end with the casting of a memorial wreath upon the

Delaware River as remembrance for our brave military personnel who lost their lives in

the Battle 75 years ago.

 

The Panel Discussion will feature the role of the Battleship as flagship and Admiral Halsey,

and the role that the Delaware River Valley played in getting many of the ships to the fight.

 

Other activities to commemorate this anniversary include:

 

–  The World War II radio room will be open to visitors all day and guests will be able to

actively use the equipment to tune the radio and hear real broadcasts.

 

–  Staff will be on hand to assist visitors in communicating in Morse code and Semaphore

on the signal bridge.

 

–  Learn from Admiral Halsey why he made the decisions that he did from the Flag Bridge

where the real Halsey stood 75 years before.

Located on the Delaware River, along the Camden Waterfront across from the city of  Philadelphia,

the Battleship is open for guided and audio tours every day from 9:30am to 3pm.  Spend the First
