The Battleship New Jersey will open for walk-up tours every day from 9:30am to 3pm, beginning Wednesday, March 1.
To celebrate opening every day, the Battleship is offering guests half-price Fire Power self-guided tours of the World’s Greatest Battleship throughout the day on Thursday, March 1.
Fire Power tours highlight the Battleship’s weapons systems and how the crew lived aboard this floating city. The tour features the 16-inch gun turrets, the Bridge, the Combat Engagement Center, the 53-foot Seasprite helicopter and more.
New for this season is the recently reinstalled Quad 40 Gun, located on the fantail. The gun was aboard the USS New Jersey during World War II and the Korean War. Guests cannot only check out the gun, but they can also sit in the gunner’s seat and move the barrels. However, you won’t be able to fire it!
Further, the Battleship recently acquired an exact 3D image of the bottle of champagne that New Jersey First Lady Carolyn Hawkins Edison christened the USS New Jersey on Dec. 7, 1942. The historic artifact, laser-etched into a solid piece of crystal glass, weighing 65lbs., is on display in the Captain’s in-port cabin. It is displayed in a special case, built by the Battleship’s carpenters, which features a rotating turntable and special lighting, allowing guests to see every beautiful detail of this exquisite piece. A special thanks to John Keegan, President of the Edison Foundation, for allowing the Battleship staff to photograph the original bottle.
