Battleship Celebrates 75th Anniversary of Her Commissioning

 Remarks from WWII USS New Jersey Veteran, Quad 40 Gun Shoot and more!

DETAILS:       The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial will celebrate the 75th anniversary of her

commissioning into the U.S. Navy with a ceremony on her forecastle at 10am on Wednesday,

May 23.


Highlights of the Commissioning ceremony will include remarks by WWII veteran George R.

Komer, who served aboard the USS New Jersey, and Azalia McDowell-Leckszas, whose father,

Percival McDowell, was the first Executive Officer of the USS New Jersey.  Further, John

Keegan, Chairman & President of the Charles Edison Foundation, will present the champagne

container used to christen the USS New Jersey in 1942.  The ceremony will conclude with cake

and beverages in the Officers’ Wardroom and the firing of the recently restored Quad 40 Gun,

along with the portside 5-inch gun.


The ceremony is free for all to attend.


Battleship crew will also participate in a Dedication Ceremony for the recently displayed 16-inch

gun barrel at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.  A ceremony there, which will feature city and navy

officials, will take place at 2pm on Wednesday, May 23.

Located on the Delaware River, along the Camden Waterfront across from the city of

Philadelphia, the Battleship is open every day for tours from 9:30am to 5pm. Enjoy craft

beers from over 30 New Jersey breweries.  The NJ Beer Festival on the Battleship will

take place on the fantail on Saturday, June 23 from 1pm to 5pm, with a VIP session open

to a select few at 12pm.  Live music, food and a tour of the ship are include.  General
