Battleship Awards 10 Scholarships to Camden Students June 7, 2022
BATTLESHIP’S 10TH YEAR OF AWARDING CAMDEN AREA STUDENTS WITH SCHOLARSHIPS
CAMDEN WATERFRONT, NJ – June 9, 2022 – The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial hosted her annual Camden Resident Student Scholarship Awards Ceremony and Dinner on Thursday, June 9, in the Battleship’s Officers’ Wardroom. Ten students from the Camden community were awarded a $1000 scholarship to help with their future education. This was the 10th year anniversary of the Battleship awarding scholarships to Camden students.
Shelia Davis, Vice President, City of Camden Council, Katrina T. McCombs, State Superintendent of Camden City School District and State Assemblyman William (Bill) W. Spearman addressed the students and their families as well as joined Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Battleship, Marshall Spevak, and Executive Director Phil Rowan in awarding the scholarships to the students. Congressman Donald W. Norcross D NJ-01 addressed the students with a special video presentation. The students and their families, as well as a few past scholarship winners, enjoyed dinner in the Officers’ Wardroom and then posed for a group photo on the Battleship’s forecastle (forward deck).
Each of the 10 students, all Camden, NJ residents, have been selected by their respective schools; one from each of the eight secondary schools in Camden, plus one student from Camden County College and one student from Rutgers University Camden.
“We are thrilled to be providing these exceptional students assistance as they move forward in their academic careers,” said Dennis Levitt, member of the Board of Trustees for the Battleship New Jersey. “These Camden students have been recommended by their teachers for their scholastic achievements and we are thrilled to recognize them aboard the Big J.”
The students who received scholarships from the Battleship were::
- Dynasty Birriel, of Rutgers University Camden, who will remain in Rutgers and study Health Services Nursing
- Kenneth Gattis, of Camden High School , who will be attending Swarthmore College
- Disneiry Jimenez, of Camden Big Picture Learning Academy, who will be attending Rowan College Burlington County
- Ildeanis Martinez, of Brimm Medical Arts High School, who will be attending Rowan University
- Luis Ramos, of Woodrow Wilson High School, who will be attending Rowan University
- Ivelise Rodriguez, of Camden County College, who will remain at Camden County College and study Social Work / Psychology
- Marcela Sandres, of LEAP Academy Charter School, who will be attending Rutgers University Newark
- SaNai Sclafford, of Camden Academy Charter High School, who will be attending Rowan University
- Vicki Wang, of Camden Catholic High School, who will be attending Thomas Jefferson University East Falls
- Ziaira Williams, of Creative Arts High School, who will be attending Camden County College
