CAMDEN AREA STUDENTS WILL BE HONORED ABOARD THE BIG J ON JUNE 17
CAMDEN WATERFRONT, NJ – June 15, 2016 – The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial
will host her fourth annual Camden Resident Student Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Friday,
June 17 at 6pm in the Battleship’s Officers Wardroom.
The Hon. Dana L. Redd, Mayor of Camden, and Phil Rowan, Executive Director/CEO of the
Battleship New Jersey, will present scholarship awards to 10 Camden resident students. Each of these
10 students, all Camden, NJ residents, have been selected by their respective schools; one from each
of the eight secondary schools in Camden, plus one student from Camden County College and one
student from Rutgers University Camden.
“Once again, it’s an honor to help these amazing students move forward in their academic careers,”
commented Dennis Levitt, member of the Board of Trustees for the Battleship New Jersey. “These
Camden students have been recommended by their teachers for their scholastic achievements
and we are excited to recognize them aboard our nation’s most decorated battleship.”
The students receiving the initial scholarships from the Battleship include:
- Katherine Jaquez, MetEast High School
- Gabreila Torres-Gonzalez, Woodrow Wilson High School
- Ashly Esteves, Camden Academy Charter High School
- Stephen Young, Leap Academy University Charter School
- Aneesha Ames, Brimm Medical Arts High School
- Anay Medina, Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy
- Triet Nguyen, Camden Catholic High School
- Maggie Battles, Camden High School
- Christina Benson, Camden County College
- David Garcia, Rutgers – Camden
Further, David Garcia of Rutgers – Camden, who served five years of combat in Iraq, will share
how his career in the military has benefited him as a student.
As a Camden, New Jersey- based institution, the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial

of her homeport of Camden.
