DATE: Saturday, April 7: Vietnam War Artifact Displays, Re-enactors, Veteran Sessions: 10:00 am – 3 pm
DETAILS: The Battleship New Jersey will host the 8th annual Vietnam War Living History Day on Saturday, April 7
from 10am to 3pm. The event, which includes Vietnam War re-enactors throughout the ship and artifacts
in the Officers’ Wardroom, also features Vietnam veteran interview sessions in the wardroom.
The schedule of interviews is attached. This year, the Battleship’s Curatorial Department will interview
Vietnam veterans from the Navy, Army and Marine Corps. The interviewees include one author, two
Tour guides from the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial, a current Battleship staff member and the
Executive Director of the Board of Trustees for the Battleship New Jersey. The interviews are free for
Guests touring the ship to attend and will take place every half-hour from 10am to 1pm.
The interview schedule is as follows:
10:00am Alan J. Shotwell, LCdr, USN
Two tours, one on the USS Vesuvius (AE-15) Carrier Task Force 115 and one tour with Swift Boats and IUWG 52 Cam Ranh Bay and Nha Trang during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Member of the USS New Jersey Veterans Association
10:30am Steve Sheehan, USN
Served aboard the USS New Jersey in 1968. President of the Board of Trustees for the Battleship New Jersey.
11:00am James Biringer, USMC
Enlisted in the Marines in Sept.1965 year discharged in Sept 1969. Served in Vietnam from July 67 to Oct 68. Sgt. – Communications – Radio- Telegraph operator / Communication Chief with the 5th 155 Gun Battery.
11:30am Jim McGinnis, USA
Enlisted in U. S. Army in October 1965 and served with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade until July 1967 as a Senior Scout Observer in a Recon Platoon. Jim’s MOS 11-Bravo served with Delta Company 3/21.
12:00pm Ken Kersch, USN
Served aboard the USS New Jersey in 1968. Currently manages The Battleship New Jersey’s Overnight program and Gun Crew.
12:30pm Joe Rosato, USN
Served in The Vietnam War at Yankee Station (Gulf Of Tonkin) in 1968 as a Helmsman aboard the aircraft carrier USS America CVA-66 and remained a crew member until 1970. Author of “Dog Tags and Wedding Bands,” real life traumatic experiences that happened to many innocent civilians during the Vietnam war.
1:00pm Bob Troxel, USN
Served aboard the USS New Jersey from 1968 to 1969 as Main Battery Fire Control Tech.
