Curatorial Intern (Now accepting Applications for Summer 2020)

Reports To:                Director of Curatorial & Educational Affairs

Division:                     Curatorial & Educational Affairs

Salary Range:            Unpaid (See Below)

Exempt (Y/N):           N

Job Description:

Curatorial Interns learn about how the museum is managed through work with several departments within the museum. Students will be working with museum staff to educate the public about an aspect of the ship’s history, and research and preserve the ship.

Based around student availability, interns typically work about 20 hours/month. However, most interns do so through their university for school credit and each school has different requirements for hours, we will work with that requirement. Because of this, most internships last one semester, but are dependent on the requirements of the school.

The Battleship does have many steep ladders and being able to traverse the ship does help; however, this internship does not require being able to climb the stairs. If you have any accessibility concerns, please contact us to discuss it.

Responsibilities:

  • Interns will learn about the ship’s history and equipment
  • Focus areas:
    • Oral History: Interviewing veterans of the ship and cataloging previous interviews to ease access to them.
    • Collections: Helping catalogue the museum’s artifacts.
    • Education: Creating programs that can be used both on and off the ship to teach children and adults the history and science of the ship.
  • Speaking to the general public about your particular focus area.

Qualifications

  • Preference to students at Camden County College, Rutgers Camden, and other Camden residents
  • Interest in history and education.
  • Ability to retain historical facts and relate that information to visitors in an interesting and informative way.
  • Preference towards those interested in pursuing a career in History, Museums, Libraries, Archives, or related fields.
  • This internship is not open to High School students, but those students should apply to our High School Internship program instead.

Scholarships:

There are scholarships available to qualified students receiving college credit for their internship. This scholarship is for $1,000 and is sent directly to the school that the student is attending. The museum will need to coordinate with your school about the requirements of your internship. This scholarship is designed to make internship experiences more accessible, we encourage students of color, those who are underrepresented in the cultural sector, and students from low-income backgrounds to apply.

Summer 2020 Internship Applications are due by March 1

Notifications will be sent by April 15

  • Applications must be e-mailed to Libby Jones (she/her) at L.Jones@battleshipNewJersey.org. All questions can also be sent to this address.

If you are planning on using your internship for school credit and our scholarship, please indicate so in your cover letter with necessary information about your school’s requirements.
  • Interviews need not be done in person, but can be done by phone or video call. Students currently outside of the Camden area are still eligible for internships as long as they will be back in the area by the time of their internship.
