DETAILS:     The inaugural Naval Symposium aboard the Battleship New Jersey will take place today, Saturday, Nov. 12 with lunch in the Officers’ Wardroom at noon followed by              presentations by Dr. Michael Golda, Chief Technology Officer, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division, and Dr. James Holmes, Professor of Strategy, Naval War College.

ROTC students from regional colleges have been invited to attend this event, which will focus on the past and future of the US Navy.  Students will enjoy a Fire Power tour prior to a lunch in the Wardroom at noon.

As Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Michael Golda, a graduate of the US Naval Academy,  is responsible for the planning and execution of the research, development, and transition of new components and integrated machinery systems for future surface vessels and undersea vehicles of the United States Navy.  The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division, formerly known as the Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station (NAVSSES), has steadily grown since it was established 106 years ago. Today, more than 1900 scientists, engineers and support personnel are responsible for the development and maintenance of all of the machinery onboard the Navy’s surface ships, aircraft carriers, and submarines.

James Holmes is a professor of strategy at the Naval War College and veteran of the faculty at the University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs. A former U.S. Navy surface warfare officer, he served as a weapons and engineering officer in the battleship Wisconsin, engineering and firefighting instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command, and military professor of strategy at the Naval War College. He was the last gunnery officer to fire a battleship’s big guns in anger.
