Battleship Salutes Camden Scholarship Winner with Awards Dinner

CAMDEN AREA STUDENTS WILL BE HONORED ABOARD THE BIG J ON JUNE 16

 

CAMDEN WATERFRONT, NJ – June 16, 2017 – The Battleship New Jersey Museum

and Memorial will host her annual Camden Resident Student Scholarship Awards

Ceremony on Friday, June 16 at 6pm in the Battleship’s Officers Wardroom.

 

The Hon. Dana L. Redd, Mayor of Camden, will present scholarship awards to 10

Camden resident students. Each of these 10 students, all Camden NJ residents, have

been selected by their respective schools; one from each of the eight secondary schools

in Camden, plus one student from Camden County College and one student from

Rutgers University Camden.

 

“We are thrilled to be providing these exceptional students assistance as they move

forward in their academic careers,” said Dennis Levitt, member of the Board of Trustees

for the Battleship New Jersey.  “These Camden students have been recommended by their

teachers for their scholastic achievements and we are thrilled to recognize them aboard the

Big J.”

 

The students receiving the initial scholarships from the Battleship include:

 

  • Marcqui Hill, of Brimm Medical Arts

 

  • Iris N. Estevas, of Camden Academy Charter

 

  • Kayla Evans, of Camden High School

 

  • Soledad Velazquez, of Camden Catholic High School

 

  • Jonathan M. Simmons, of Camden County College

 

  • Mya May Mercado, of Leap Academy

 

  • Keysean E. Sommonds, of Met East High School

 

  • Lyonna Herbert, of  Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy

 

  • Ann Ariel Bru, of Rutgers Camden

 

  • Rasheem Burns, of Woodrow Wilson High School

 

As a Camden, New Jersey- based institution, the Battleship New Jersey Museum and

Memorial is committed to furthering the educational aspirations of Camden resident

students.  A key part of the Battleship’s mission is to provide positive benefits and to

educate students and residents of her homeport of Camden.

Philadelphia, the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is a non-profit historic

Battleship fundraising dinner – the Steel Beach Blast — will take place on Saturday, July 1

at 7:00pm.  Guests will enjoy a delicious barbecue meal – courtesy of Mission BBQ, open

bars, live steel drum music, a visit by the Phillies Phanatic and the amazing view of the

fireworks over the Delaware River at dusk!  Tickets are a $175 donation per person.
