Position: Overnight Watch Officer

Reports to: Director of Overnights/Executive Director

Division: Operations

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains locked status of white gates after 5 PM except to admit authorized personnel
  • Issues evening passes to vendors and guests as authorized by managers on duty or identified by a group representative hosting an event on the ship
  • Checks packages and purses and backpacks on a regular and/or random basis
  • Informs/reviews safety regulations and concerns for the public arriving for events
  • Maintains radio contact with the Quarterdeck
  • Maintains emergency call list in vicinity of pier gate
  • Maintains safety equipment as needed, and monitors ship?s and pier?s cleanliness and appearance
  • Monitors public behavior on pier and proximity of boats in the water near the ship on the shore side
  • After expected guests have entered, moves to roving patrol on ship
  • Maintains a uniformed security presence in the view of the public, monitoring shipboard activities
  • Leads groups on tours for encampments or events as required
  • Completes closing procedures of the tour route when tours are completed for the night, including restoring any altered exhibit areas to tour condition
  • Remains on ship until all public and vendor personnel (except for cleaning contractors) have departed for events.
  • Overnights may be required for encampment programs
  • Other duties as assigned related to security, logistics and crowd control

Qualifications

  • Strong verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Professionalism and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Flexibility in adjusting to assignment and environment changes
  • Ability to work out of doors in adverse weather conditions
  • Military/Naval knowledge helpful
  • Security experience a plus
  • Must undergo approved docent training on the Battleship New Jersey
